Freezing computer

The computer freezes when a fle is highlighited and the attempt is made to delete it. The only way to recover is to click ctrl+alt and delete to activate the Task Manager. The same thing happens when an attempt is made to create a new file. Any solution to this problem is appreciated Thanks.

Could be a corrupt system file first try this:

START>RUN

Type the following;

SFC.EXE /scannow (space between EXE and /)

Hit enter

If it finds a corrupt file it may or may not ask for the XP CD

I tried your suggestion and it did ask for the OS CD. The one I thought was the XP professional disk that I found did not work. I do have the original product Key but seem to have misplaced the CD that matches THIS key. Is there something else I can do?

1st make sure the product key of the installed version of XP is the same as the product key ytou say you have:

Go to a command prompt and type the following:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

It should give you the key. Compare it to the one you have.

Or you can use this freeway program to find it:

If it does not match then you might be able to change it to match the CD/DVD you have:
