USB conflicts

Windopws XP suports my USB ports and automatically accepts Pen Drive type storage units and has automatically installed a Canon scanner (Lide20). It has installed the software (Finepix Viewer) for my camera but now there seem to be USB conflicts.
I know that you cannot use two USB items at the same time, but now the Pen Drive is recognised under Windows Explorer but the makes that system freeze so that I have to restart my computer. Also the Finepix viewer will no longer recognise the camera long enough to upload the pictures from it.
Is there any way around this or is it impossible to do other things like this once a scanner is installed?
Thanks for any suggestions.
James
