Jintan, I can run chkdsk c:, if that's what you want.

Why can't you paste the log please?

While you are answering that, yes, go ahead and run chkdsk c:, but no switches (ie. /r).

Good enough. Go ahead and run chkdsk /r, Yes to running during startup, and reboot and allow it to run. For now just see if that helps any.

thanks Jintan for your help.
Ran chkdsk /r, the laptop rebooted into Vista. Still slow in booting up, and locks up (non-responsive) within say 3 minutes. I forced the shutdown and it went into chkdsk again. This time, I rebooted into the safe mode. The laptop is only working normally in the safe mode. |

Just to be sure please, run chkdsk again (no switches). Just to verify you are not getting repeat file system errors, which might suggest drive issues still. Those many FOUND folders suggest it is.
The error logs tell little. There is a procedure to uncheck half of the startups, until you whittle down the list and ID any problem ones. But before that, uninstall the following to verify those aren't an issue: Go to Start - Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features/Uninstall, then click on each of the following programs, if they show there, and click "Uninstall/Change". AIM Toolbar - Search hijacker, resource waste. AVG Security Toolbar - Search hijacker, resource waste. McAfee Security Scan Plus - Scans only, so of little benefit. Yahoo! Detect - Questionable value. AOL Toolbar for Internet Explorer - Search hijacker, resource waste. AOL Toolbar for Firefox - Search hijacker, resource waste. MSN Toolbar - Search hijacker, resource waste. Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer - Search hijacker, resource waste. Bing Bar - Search hijacker, resource waste. Spybot - Search & Destroy - Questionable value. Reboot to normal mode, check for change. |

Jintan, I removed all as directed. Under normal mode, still locks up and freezes. Laptop only works under safe mode.

You don't mention if you did the chkdsk normal mode run again, to verify this isn't a drive issue. If you haven't, please do that before the next steps. AIf it comes back with issues again, stop and post back here.
Then the msconfig bit next in line. Go to Start Search, type msconfig in the Start Search box. Msconfig will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as administrator". When the msconfig display opens, click the Startup tab, Then click the Enable All button (you can change things back after we are done with this step). Uncheck 1/2 of the startups listed there. Then click Apply and OK and allow the reboot. Reboot to normal mode, and see if the problem no longer occurs. If you still have the problem, open msconfig again, but this time recheck the startups you had unchecked, then uncheck the other 1/2. And again Apply/OK and reboot. This is a process of elimination. If the problem source is a startup, you will have narrowed it down to being in 1/2 of the msconfig list. Make sure the 1/2 that did not cause problems remain checked, then cut the other group in half again. Then again uncheck one half of that, Apply/OK and reboot. See which new 1/2 holds the problem startup. Repeat those steps until you identify the problem startup. |
