"NTVDM CPU has encounted an illegal instruction"

Hi there,
While trying to install Adobe Font Folio, I keep receiving an error message under the header "16 bit MS-DOS Substsystem". It says, "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS: 0429 IP: 3c70 OP: 63 6b 20 6f 76 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." If I press ignore, the message just pops up again. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Thanks so much!

Is you pc a Packard Bell ? With a PB a MS DOS patch is needed because SP2 interfers with dos commands.

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe or Regedit.exe).

START | RUN Type in Regedit hit OK

1.Locate and select the following value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD

2.On the Edit menu, click Delete.

3.On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-string Value.

4.Type VDD in the Value Name box, and then press ENTER.

5.Quit Registry Editor.

1. verify that the proper version of the Command.com file is installed in the systemroot/System32 folder on your computer.

The Windows XP version of the Command.com file has attributes similar to the following:

Size Date Time
------------------------------
50620 08-23-2001 4:00 A.M

Easies way is to right click on START then to EXPLORE, you will have to unhide system files to see it.

Top menu go to Tools | Folder Options, View, now uncheck the box that says view Hide protected Operating System Files.

Now in explorer click on the + sign next to the C: drive folder then go down to Windows then to system32 folder in the right pane you shopuld see the file:

command.com right click on it and go to properties

If it looks OK then go HERE download and run the fix lited there.

I ran the program, but it's still not working. If it matters, I'm running XP Pro, but I could only find my XP Home CD. The program said it successfully fixed the problem, though. Thank you so much for all your help!

That's the thing, it won't let me install it to begin with. Whenever I try, it gives me that error.

Hi. Use adaware to remove it. That error message is caused by a variant of the ALCON(sp?) worm. I noticed something was wrong when i couldnt open the cmd.exe through the run box, but could run it in the system32 folder. Adaware picked up the culprit from docs and settings and removed it.
