Are you taking the...

By all means, try it. I'm sure you will be at the shop again very soon purchasing a new CPU.

You may not only ruin the cpu, but the harddrive, motherboard, etc.

if only for a few seconds and leave the cover off. Maybe longer if a house fan was blowing across it. But I really would not advise it for any length of time.

Howdy:

Just a quick post here..

A while back I bought a new system.. Fired it up to load Windows.. Got the post beep and then everything went black..

Opened up the case and found they had neglected to install the heatsink and fan correctly (it was there, but just hanging).. Fried the processor.. they replaced it..

Total runtime.. maybe 3-5 seconds.. I don't think you reflexes would be fast enough..

Murray

FFS man are you bored or what?

I left my heatsink off after twiddling about (yeh I know - "DOH", but I twiddle a hell of a lot) and on an AMD AthlonXP 1800, the time from pressing the 'ON' switch to solder running out of the chip (I kid ye not) was just over 2 (TWO count them) seconds.

But be my guest, after all it's your money.
