Question How to get rid of Windows Update restart/postpone/countdown function?

My mother's laptop is a Toshiba running on Windows Vista Home Premium. What happens on her laptop but has never happened on mine is that after Windows Update has found updates, an icon pops up on the right bottom corner of the screen, saying that Windows Update has to shut down to install the updates and will do so in 5 minutes - it has a kind of countdown bar - or the computer can be restarted or the installation can be postponed. How can this prompt be gotten rid of?

Check in the Control Panel. There is a Windows Update icon in there and it may have the settings you are looking for. Once you click that icon, look to the left and there is a spot that says: "Change Settings"

Thanks :-D Had to change the settings so that Windows Update would first download the updates but notify the user before installation. Problem solved.

There is also simple workaround to this problem.
No matter, what updates are set to, if for some reason the update was installed, either automatically, or manually, all you have to do is to open Command Promt, and run this command:
net stop "windows update"
Windows won't remind to restart computer anymore.
Note. The above command works only for current session.
