Wordpad

Can anyone help? I am using Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. Yesterday I composed a birthday greeting for a friend using Microsoft Office Word 2007 and including a "clip art" birthday cake. I saved it in Documents and then forwarded it as an attachment to a Yahoo email. He received it all right.
Later when I went to retrieve it from Documents (where it is showing as a DOCX file) it opened in Wordpad showing nothing but pages of meaningless squiggles.
Why is this and how can I convert Wordpad back to Word?

Open Word then open the document from within the program.
