System is 'freezing up' sporadically

Ok...I'm back. Boot up process issue is gone, but my system is still 'freezing up' sporadically. I'm not sure what program is causing this...but it tends to happen when I attempt to launch Firefox after the system boots up -OR- after the system has sat idle for a period of time.

Suggestions??

Steve, I have started a new topic for you. Please post all new issues in a new topic.

Intermittent issues can be really difficult to pinpoint. Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking (restart your computer and tap F8 as it restarts) and run that way for a day. Does the problem still occur?

Safe mode doesn't have any issues. It seems that if I attempt to launch programs (Firefox for example) shortly after booting the system up -or- after the system has sat idle for a little bit, that is when the issue occurs.

Perhaps there are still programs / processes still running in the background at these times that need to finish up....??

Have a look in Event Viewer and see if any Errors (not Information or Warnings) were recorded at the time and date that the problem occurred. Go to Start Search and type:

eventvwr.msc

eventvwr.msc will appear at the top of the Menu. Doubleclick on it and click on Custom Views > Administrative Events. Look at Errors only. Post back the Event Source, the Event ID and any other relevant information. To do this, doubleclick on the Event, click on the General tab and click on "Copy" and paste the information into a new document (if more than one error) and then post it here.

Here's the results:

7 Errors on 4/5 between 8:15 pm and 8:22 pm & 2 Warnings.

Error - LoadPerf - ID 3011
Error - LoadPerf - ID 3012
Error - LoadPerf - ID 3011
Error - LoadPerf - ID 3012
Error - Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider - ID 7000
Error - Dhcp-Client - ID 1002
Error - SideBySide - ID 33

On 4/4, same issues listed above, however there is a 'Critical' level issue

Critical - Kernel-Power - ID 41

As I scroll back through the history, it appears a majority of the recent 'Errors' are all the SideBySide ID - 41 issues in the past.

That's not enough information to help Steve. Please doubleclick on each error, click on the General tab and click on "Copy" and paste the information into a new document (if more than one error) and then post it here.

It looks like the performance counters are corrupted however they can be rebuilt.

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the below commands after the prompt> (one line at a time) and hit Enter after each line.

Code:
cd %windir%\system32
Lodctr /R
When the rebuild is complete, you see the below message.

Info: Successfully rebuilt performance counter setting from system backup store

Type exit.

Next open your Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility and click on the Wireless Networks tab. Go to Edit > Options and uncheck "Authenticate prior to Windows domain logon" under the Windows domain logon settings.

Reboot now and tell me what errors still appear. The error relating to a parallel port driver is of no consequence. It just means your bios doesnt support it.

I did the rebuild, but I'm not sure what you mean by: "Next open your Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility and click on the Wireless Networks tab."

I found the utility, but when I click to open it...nothing happens. No window is launched. If I remember correctly, I unchecked this item per steps you had me do previously to determine what was causing my system to boot-up slowly. Do I need to go back and add it back???

Last edited by sganderson; April 7th, 2011 at 02:43 AM. Reason: Found the utility...originally I couldn't...

Yes re-enable the service and then disable it again after you have carried out the final suggestions above.

Ok...carried those steps out and didn't have a 'freeze-up' again last night or this morning yet. I will continue to use my system and will keep you posted.

For now--knock on wood--it appears we have resolved all issues.

Uncross your fingers because I still have issues.... Same symptom as before--a program acts like it is going to launch, but then it just seems to 'spin' and never launches. This issue seems to occur after the laptop has been in idle (lid shut, no programs running) and then I attempt to begin using it again.

I am running the system in SAFE Mode with Networking now to see if the issue still exists, but so far it hasn't shown up.

I appreciate all of your help so far. This is really frustrating and I'm willing to completely wipe the system out and start over if need be... If that means making a back-up disc of everything on my system that I would like to keep, I'll do it. Just tell me what else I can provide to see if there are solutions for this issue.

Does the issue also reoccur when you clean boot the machine? Clean boot it and run it like that for a day or so.
