Audio and Video more distorted every day

Hi everybody,

I just spent the last hour looking at posts to try to find my problem and found some similiar ones but nothing to make me say, "Oh, so that's the problem!"

Here we go, I have an:

Acer Aspire 6530G
640 GB dual HDD (320X2)
AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core
4 GB DDR2

I'm running Vista too.

If you can't tell, I read that right off the laptop sticker. Anyhow, in the last couple of weeks my audio and video have been getting worse. Choppy video and even songs sound like scratched cds. These are the same files that played perfectly before. I've tried to do the system backup a few times but I keep getting errors regardless on how far back I go.

I read some posts saying that it may be the sites visited. Ok. I can deal with that but how do I fix it. I'm running Kapersky as an antivirus but it doesn't really give me anything that I didn't have in the first few weeks of the laptop. I recently did a couple of different AVG online scans with no probs either. I'm afraid to do a recovery and frankly, don't want to if I lose everything on the computer. It would take me too long to transfer. Apart from that, I'm still pretty computer ignorant.

I haven't tried highjackthis because I'm not sure which site to trust in the download. I'd appreciate a good link please and anything else you suggest to use.

first of all, how full is the drive your os is installed on. You need about 15-20 percent of the drive free for working space. In addition have you done a disk cleanup lately? I mean, have you deleted any and all temporary files on your system? I would suggest using ccleaner from ccleaner to get rid of your temporary files.

If you think you have nasties on your system, you really need to post in the malware forum where the experts there can tell you what to do.

Thanks Dan. Yes, I did a clean-up, deleted all the temps and my hardrive is 91.5GB free space of 144GB. I realized later that I probably posted in the wrong area but didn't want to keep reposting until I was sure. It's probably a bug or a missing file when I took care of one. Thanks again. Charlie

Hello again, I'm back. PLEASE HELP! I have spent a few days in the malware forum and was just referred back her by Tom (Jintan). It seems like he has run out of ideas to check for malware that may not even exist. I have run a slew of programs with no change including: malwarebytes, resit, memtest, kapersky, minidumps, gmr, rootrepeal and 1 other that I can't remember the name to no avail. To see the message traffic from this you can look at the topic - "Virus caused distorted audio/video. Worse every day!".

The problem is still the same. I have ample space on my hardrive and partitions, and everything works but the a/v is distorted (always worse and worse) and internet is slow as sin and somedays almost at a stop. Even the typing speed changes to a near stop somedays. I've run defrags and ccleaner also.

Any help would be of great appreciation! I'm taking various online courses so I definitely need my computer to be running normal. Thanks in advance!

Hi again. I haven't looked at any of the logs from the Malware forum thread that you worked with Tom.

Can you advise -

How long have you had the laptop?
Where do you usually use it? (e.g. on a table etc) Does it get hot to the touch?
Is it equally slow when plugged into mains power and on battery?
What sort of internet/network connection are you using?

Sorry about the new post. Since I was already advised to another forum from the original and then got no response after a couple of days in the original, I assumed I was in the wrong forum. My apologies.

To answer your questions:

I've had the computer since June. I use it on a wooden table or wooden tv tray with now vent blockage and it doesn't get hot at all regardless of with or without the battery. It does slow down when on only battery but that was the same from the first day and never like it is now.

As for internet, I'm on a wireless connection from a hardline. The problem isn't so much the internet but everything else is slow and the a/v was my first sign of it. The a/v is just plain distorted like a scratched cd and the video comes out with all the pixels in disarray. This is whether I'm on or off of the internet.

Well this is a long shot but since its a laptop it probably has video and sound integrated on mobo. There are some free utilities you can run that will identify all the devices on your machine. You could try to reinstall the drivers or see if there is an updated driver for your board. If you go to cnet and search belarc they have a free utility that will identify it for you. Had a similar problem with an nvidia nforce 3 250 and had a heck of a time finding support from Nvidia. Luckily I found some remixed drivers for the board.

I looked at and downloaded the Belarc program but frankly, I'm scared to start downloading a bunch of different things. I don't have any idea what I'm looking for or what I need. Thanks for the heads up though. At the very least, I got a good run-down of all my programs and other things.

If you want you can post your belarc log and maybe one of us will find the driver you need. Have you checked control panel, administrator tools, event viewer and went through your logs to see if you have any consistent errors? Also have you right clicked my computer, selected properties and looked in your device manager to see if you have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to any of your hardware profiles?

Y'all continue with the checks you are doing, but in reviewing the information we covered in your Malware Removal forum thread CHARLITO, there is one other scan I would like to see the results of.


Download Gmer's mbr.exe from here and place it on your C drive (so the file is then C:\mbr.exe).

Go to Start - Run, type cmd (and press OK). At the prompt type or copy/paste the following, pressing Enter after each:

cd\
mbr.exe -t

Then type exit and press Enter to close the command window.

The report created in the command window will have been saved to C:\mbr.log. Locate that and post it here please.

But also please follow up with the current series of driver etc. checks you all are doing here.

This is from acers website, these are the realtek drivers for your sound. According to Belarc you have a aspire 6530G you could also go to the site directly and see all the drivers that are available for your machine

I did have a question for you though, do you remember when all this started happening? Recently I downloaded a driver from windows update for my graphics card and for some reason windows didnt play well with it and turned my color into 4 bit color I had to reinstall the drivers back to the factory one and my display worked fine...something to think about.

Hi Tom.
Good to hear from you again. I tried to run gmr in the command window and it tells me in Italian that mbr.exe -t cannot run because it isn't recognized as an internal or external command, program that can't be run or a file batch.

Did I save it wrong or could this be a prob? I saved it by going to C drive and saving. When I ck the search for the file it comes up but then tells me that it doesn't exist. I tried a couple of times and different ways but nothing. It keeps giving me the prefix for my computer and I don't know how to have it saved as just C:\mbr.exe. What do you think?

Hi Gunner,

Well I downloaded and installed the drivers that you advised. The audio and video are perfect now.....except that they don't match up. By themselves they are crystal clear. Is there another tweek I have to do or is there a bigger problem?

As for how long this problem has been going on, just a few weeks now. I never manually did any updates so it may have been an automatic update that changed my drivers. Other than that, I don't know. Could the mix-matched a/v be codec problem and I have to reinstall something else?
