What is on your E drive Scott? Have you tried moving the folder there?
AM, E is just another drive.
C: 250 GB system
D: RAID1 (2x750 GB), data storage
E: 750GB Backup

I didn't mention Drive E, earlier since it didn't seem pertinent, but yes, drive E has the same behaviour as drive D. So this issue is not specific to the RAID1 array.

Scott

PS Yes, I subscribed. Thx.

Well I finally managed to recreate your error message but in my case this occurred when I chose not to transfer all files and then tried to restore to the default location (the only file that moved across was desktop.ini).

Scott do you get a "Copy and Replace" option with the error message? If so, try this and let us know if this worked. It did in my case.

AM, Yes, I do get the copy and replace option, and when I execute this, the 11 shell folders are copied from C to D, but: (a) If I store a document in one of the shell folders on C, I cannot see it drive D so the folders in "D" are not updated correctly; and (b) if I move to a shell folder and do "Properties" and then click on "Location", the location still shows drive C. In other words, the shell folders on C and D have the same name, but their functionality isn't there.

It is exciting to me that you were able to duplicate this. That is big step forward.

Scott

Are you saying that after you move these folders to your D drive using the "transfer all files" and "copy and replace" options, the original folders remain on your C drive? This shouldnt happen. If it does, try rebooting and tell me if they are still there. Or are you recreating the folders on your C drive after the move? I did manage to do this with Documents (after a few grumbles from Vista) but it was just an ordinary folder and didnt have the special attributes of the moved Documents folder.

Yes, this is what I am saying.

Reboot didn't help.

My original folders remain on drive C and these are the ones with the special attributes; the 'new' folders on D do not seem to have the special attributes. Those on D seem to be copies of those on C, but without the special Vista-OS attributes.

Thx a lot for your attention in this very perplexing problem.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure what is going on here Scott.

Perhaps it might help if I could see what is running on your computer. Go here and download Hijack This to your Desktop. When you have downloaded it, doubleclick to install. Once installed, open Hijack This and click on scan. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Also go here and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Your logs look ok Scott but what have you disabled using msconfig?

Let's also look at something else. Move the Documents folder to your D drive again please and make sure that you choose to copy all files across. Click Yes when you are presented with the "copy and replace" option".

Reboot please and if you still have the same problem you have been reporting below, eg:

Quote:
My original folders remain on drive C and these are the ones with the special attributes; the 'new' folders on D do not seem to have the special attributes. Those on D seem to be copies of those on C, but without the special Vista-OS attributes.
Make sure that you can view hidden files and folders, uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and open both folders and look for desktop.ini. Open each file in Notepad and paste the contents here please (make sure that you note which folder the desktop.ini was in).

I did not knowingly disable msconfig. I use msconfig->startup and minimize the # of programs that initiatlize upon boot. However, I often get a comment at startup that references somethign to the effect: msconfig.exe is shutdown. I also notice the programs that are checked in msconfig->startup are not the same as those which I checked. I'll post the exact error msg when I reboot.

I have yet moved the folders or rebooted, but recall I had previously moved them, per your request. As soon as I made visible the hidden files/folders per your message above, I had to 'Desktop files' and here are their contents.

I will follow your message and again move the folders and update on the results later tonight.

Thanks!

Scott

Ok. I also think it would be a good idea (for now) to renable all startups that you disabled using msconfig and reboot. When you have done this, please post a new Hijack This log and a new Silent Runners log.

Ann Marie,

From drive 'D:/JSM-File' :

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

From Drive 'C:/Users/Scott Martin' :
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

From one of the two desktop.ini files on the desktop:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21799

From the other on the desktop:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

One comment:
A couple days ago when I redirected my shell folders to drive D, they remained; they remained tonight until I rebooted. They remained there until today--When I rebooted, they were gone.

I then followed your instructions and redirected those from drive C to drive D, and same result as previously reported, with desktop.ini file contents noted above.

Scott

Ann Marie,

Here are the results of the HiJack this, post reboot, and reattempt at redirecting shell folders; hidden/system files are visible. All startup files in the msconfig file are now enabled, though they weren't for this HiJack run/post.
