What Is MSHTMLLAYOUTHARDASSERT ?
I've been receiving the following error message in my event viewer since late January:
Event 1001 Fault bucket 8, type 5 Event Name: MSHTMLLAYOUTHARDASSERT Response: None Cab Id: 0 Problem signature: P1: P2: P3: P4: P5: P6: P7: P8: P9: P10: Attached files: These files may be available here: C:\Users\Howard\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WE R\ReportArchive\Report115e74b6 I've located the Windows Error Report referenced, but am unable to open it (report.wer). Any ideas what this is? I'm not aware of any system malfunctions, but I hate to ignore a recurring message like this. |

Hi HowardA. It means the MSHTML layout engine (see here for more info) has generated an error message (hard assertion failure) but there is no clue as to what caused the problem. Make sure you send the report to Microsoft.
What version of IE do you have installed? |

I'm running IE8. I wonder if there is a connection. I just upgraded to that version in the past couple of months, just about the time this error started to appear.

I checked the event viewer on my laptop, which is also running IE8, and I find the same windows error report. I'm guessing IE8 is the cause, but I don't imagine there is anything I can or should do at this point. I'd be happy to report it to Microsoft, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

You could uninstall IE8 if you wish. Your browser would revert back to IE7.
