That router can handle 2.4ghz and 5 Ghz as long as your adapter can handle 5Ghz

The realtek RTL8188EE is an 802.11bgn 2.4 ghz single chip controller, which means it only supports 2.4 ghz

Asus USB ac 53 (wireless) supports 5ghz

Realtek Pcie family controller can support up to1GB

So when you connect wireless are you using the USB wiresless instead of the built in wireless?

If you go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center, you will see your connection under ACCESS TYPE/Connections

Left click on it and you will see your speed.

Some laptops you have to turn off the internal wireless when using a USB wireless.

That definitely makes a difference - my rig is old! I may start looking for a comparable Asus USB ac 53 (wireless). I did turn off the internal wireless yes.
