Geocities is ok for a free web host. There are lots out there and many of them have web building tools. I've never used any of those tools so I don't know if any are better than others. You could sign up for several and give them a try since they're free.

I think you'd be better off to make your webpages on your hard drive and then upload them to a host. There are a number of html editors that you can use to create html files. Some are listed in the sticky topic in this forum. The only free wysiwyg editor I know of is Nvu.

If you want to try some of the other html editors you'll need to know a bit of html. I don't know how far along you are so you can pick and choose the tutorials at W3schools.

I used geocities years ago before it became part of yahoo. Since it is free webspace, its a good place to setup practice pages and do some learning.

Freewebs is another good one, considering it's a freebie.

You can buy a domain name and web hosting together or separately. Sometimes you can get a good deal by buying them from the same company.

See your other topic for more info on domain registration.

whats the difference between working on a website offline, or online.
like geocities, u work on the site while online i beleive.

how would i work on the site offline, then upload it online?

can i use nvg or freewebs as my webhost, then work on the site offline, then upload it online?

do i need a separate program to work on it offline, or does geocities, nvg, freewebs have that ability as an option or something?

When you work on a site while it's on your hard drive you can use html editors and other tools. If you use the webhost tools you work on the site while online. Either way is ok to start with.

When you have files that you want to upload you can use an FTP program if your host supports FTP. Using FTP is similar to copying files from one folder to another in Windows Explorer. Most free webhosts require that you use their File Manager software instead of FTP to upload files. If you use the online webhost tools I think they have a button to "Update site" instead of having to transfer files.

Go ahead and sign up for a free website account somewhere. Use their software to create a basic website and update it. Many of your questions will be answered once you get started.
