Half-Life 2

I just purchased the PC game Half-Life 2 and came with 5 discs. I didn't even make it past the first disc and this message came up. ERROR 1305. Error reading from file: C:\Program Files\Valve\SteamApps\base sorce shared materials.gcf. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. I was installing it as I was online and did nothing as it was installing. I disabled everything such as Norton Internet 2006, screen saver, and desktop them. I don't know what the problem is?

Try taking the game back and getting it replaced, your disc may be corrupted.

Sounds like a corrupted disk. There is one way of getting the game without taking it back to the shops. Get the Steam installer and install Steam from the web - http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow
Once installed set up your account and enter the cd key that came with the game. Once this has been verified you'll be able to download HL2 via Steam but be warned it will take AGES even with a broadband connection. Your best bet is what oracle128 said and take the game and get it replaced because as soon as you register the cd key the game is "locked" to your e-mail.

That's the problem! I can't find an activation key on any of the cd's or box. The only thing that resembles a CD key is on the sleeve of the first cd. And the only thing that came in the box is the five discs and a quick reference

In my copy of HL2 the cd key is on a sticker just above where the dvd sits. If it's not there take it back and get another copy. Good luck.
