Networking Term of the ...

A while back I created a thread here with descriptions for various networking related terms. I have added to it now and then, but there is much more to add. I've decided to try to see if I can get one added more often, though I doubt I will make it every day.

I'll try to update this thread with a new term when my mood and time permits and roll off the previous to the glossary thread found here. If you'd like to see something included, please let me know.

Recent Terms (They can now be found in the glossary thread)
  • Round-Trip Time [RTT]
  • latency
  • Secure Shell [SSH]
  • Subnet
  • Terado
  • IPSec
  • netmask
  • SFTP

Repeater

Repeater - A network device which rebroadcasts packets on a network. The main purpose is to extend the distance that the networks can reliable cover. They can be found on both wired and wireless networks.

I saw "DHCP" and "DHCP/autonet" options in the network settings of a Fuji Xerox printer. Is there any difference? What is the difference, if any?

Thank you.
