clarification - are you trying to open it with another version of word or with 2007 version? If so, what version?

Trying to open it with Office 2003......

Here is another weird thing... When i emailed to them in 2007 format, they can open it, and it givet the warning about it is converting the file and it will be read only. So if you save it, then it works... is that weird or what?

this is because there are commonly used features that are not compatible with the older word, even when using the compatibility utility. It will convert but have to be saved so the 2007 formating can be eliminated. One thing to consider, not all 2007 document formating can be converted so there will be some problems thats unfixable.

I am a little confused as to what you mean by this. In order to open any word 2007 doc in an older version you will have to use the compatibility utility.

Yes, but I have Office 2007 on my computers... The ones with Office 2003/XP can not open it if it is saved as the 97/2003 version... it just keeps giving the error....
If I save it as the 2007 version, then they can open it and re-save it with the compatiblity deal.... hope that make sense
