Can I Legally Change Title of Windows XP

A friend wants to sell me his XP disk. It registered so I have to change title of the disk.

Can I do this? If so how do I do this? is there a fee involved.

Will Microsoft let me do this? Can you give me a link?

Please explain where you see the title? The disk isn't changed, only the name (your friend) it's registered to and if it's an OEM disk, you can't buy it anyway.

Either Way.

The copy he is selling you, unless it hasn't even been opened, is nontransferable. The way Microsoft looks at it, is if it's been installed, then it's been used and the product key is therefor bound to that computer. If you were to take that same disc, and code you could easily give it to everyone and pirate it to your friends, and family.

Hi Photolady,

If its OEM its illegal? I see OEM copies for sale all over the internet.

How do they get away with stuff like this? Would't Microsoft unregister a product as soon as they see that its OEM?

Thanks,
brainey.

No way!You wont be able to register it and your system will become inoperable after a time.

It's not OEM that the problem. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, such as HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, etc. It's the License Key and registration that would make your friend's copy illegal. You will still need to purchase a legal key of Windows, you just won't need the disc. Either way, I would not pay to get that disc, if you get it or not.

Typically sold in volume to Manufacturers.
They are wonderful editions to purchase, but are, like CHG said, bound to a computer.

The OEM I was talking about was one that came with a branded system like Dell, HP/Compaq or other. If the XP cd is one of those, then you can't even use it on your computer, legality aside, it wouldn't install.
