Word 2002 "create backup copy" not working

Hi

Newbie question. Present system Win XP Pro SP2, 2 drives (c) & (d) everything loaded on both, (d) is the working drive.

Have tried:-
1. In Word tools > option > ticked checkbox "always create backup copy", (which remains ticked) > save. doesn't work
2. Same problem on both drives?
3. Re-installed Office XP Pro 2002, problem remains?
4. Used to work in past but no longer.
5. System appears to be clean -Sysgate firewall - Trend anti-Virus - Spyware Doctor - Rootkitrevealer - F-Secure Blacklight beta2 - Windows Defender beta2

Can anyone help please
Thanks
