Laptop problems

I have a Compaq laptop that I have owned for about 6 months, I bought it brand new. The port where you plug in the power supply to charge burned out. I called a local computer repair shop and asked what it would take to fix this. The guy there told me that in Compaq laptops that port is part of the motherboard so therefore the motherboard would need to be replace and would cost me around $600. Hell I only paid $900 for the laptop. I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideason how to fix this problem or if this was an accurate diagnosis.

At my work we have a guy who knows how to fix these. He removes the old power adapter/plug and solders a new one on. See if you can find someone in your area who would be willing to do this. They do have to know exactly what they are doing, otherwise it won't work.

Humm thats interesting. That would be a great cheaper solution if I could find someone. Where do you suggest I inquire about this?

Since I'm not familar with your area, that would have to come from your searching. It would have to be someplace that is familar with computers and their components.

May be a silly question, but you say bought new, doesn't Compaq have any kind of warranty. I have a laptop from them which I know has a 1 year warranty, and I could have added to it.

Yeah, it you have only had it for six months it should still be under warranty. Contact HP and ask them about this. That would be your best bet.

Sorry, I didn't catch that it was only six months old.

I did contact them and from what i could understand of the guy he told me that the warranty would not cover this issue but that I could mail the laptop to them they could fix it and charge me only the cost of parts. I didnt buy the extended coverage.....

I would mail it to them. For the price of parts and shipping that would be your best deal. Computer shops that would do this, would charge much more.

I still don't understand why this kind of thing, which is super unusual would not be covered...I mean a part wore out is what happened. I agree sed it back and then fight with them.
