Outlook 2010/2013 hack to prevent MS Edge opening

In Outlook 2010/2013, Windows 10 if you click a URL within the email a window opens up asking if you want MS EDGE to open, lets say you chose Internet Explorer 11 then check the box to use it as the default, close the URL opens in IE 11. Next time you get the same freaking box asking again, this can be an annoyance. This problem, I believe, is only between IE 11 and MS Edge in Outlook.

I found a solution and have used it.

Open up Notepad and copy and paste the following info between the asterisks::

*************************************************

Windows Registry Editor version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\opennew\command]
@="cmd /c start %1"

*************************************************

Now go to FILE>SAVE AS

Name the file anything you want as long as it ends in .reg

example hack.reg

Save as Type select "ALL File *.*

Hit SAVE

Save it to the desktop (doesn't matter where)

Now go to the desktop and right click on the file and go to MERGE

Click YES

Now Open Outlook and when you click on a link IE 11 will open instead of asking if you want to use Edge.

Note this affects Outlook 2007 too. It is not just between IE11 and Edge. It is between IE and any other browser you have installed but the problem is only with IE where checking the option to use IE as your default does not "stick". If you select Edge, FF, PM, or Chrome - the option sticks.

Note there is now a MSKB on this. See KB3094186 offering two options. One causes the link to open in a new IE windows and the other causes the link to open in a new IE tab.

BTW, it was my understanding this was not a problem with Outlook 2013.

I use 2010 Pro, so really don't know if it affected 2013, from what I read appears not. Thanks for the link could not find it in MS.

It is a new KB (9/11/2015) and I couldn't find it either. It was only after I found a note from the Outlook development team that I was able to find it.

Supposedly, they are working on Microsoft Fixit to automate the process instead of needing to manually edit the Registry. That still seems like a Band-Aid fix - at least until they fix W10.
