Adobe Premiere Problem

I have a .avi (xvid) file that I want to load into Premiere. But when I load it up, Premiere crashes and I get the error message "Adobe Premiere has experianced an unexpected error and needs to close." or something like that. Anyway, I converted the file to mpeg2 and tried to load that. The mpeg2 file plays fine in Windows Media Player, but all I get in Premiere is the sound. Please, -please- help me. (I used TMPGenc to encode the file to mpeg2)

Thanks for any and all help
