<windows root>system32\hal.dll missing

Hi, a friend of mine is getting the message "<windows root>system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt" on his computer when he tries to boot up. I don't know all the details surrounding this, but when i searched for the message it appears that a lot of other people have had the same problem, but i couldn't really find anything that explained how to fix the problem, so if someone could give me some help with this it would be appreciated.

Thanks

The steps according to Microsoft to fix the "hal.dll missing" problem are in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

Don't let the mass of information overwhelm you. Just print out and then follow the numbered steps, one by one, which are listed under the subheading, "Resolution."

Did your friend install Win XP upgrade? If he did click the link below.

I hate when that happens! While I'm doing my post someone beats me to it. At least it's the same link. Moderator delete this post!!! Good Luck with your friends computer.
