I have recently swapped from an XP PC to a Vista laptop. On running Hijack This I see a lot of processes running. Several seem strange with names that don't register! Please could you have a look at my log. (I have looked through several specific Hijack This tutorials: Cybertech, Help2Go and bleeping computer) Thanks David ogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 12:59:47, on 20/07/2008 Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16681) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exe C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Windows\RtHDVCpl.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\Program Files\Thomson\SpeedTouch USB\dragdiag.exe C:\Windows\StartupMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\CarboniteUI.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\AAWTray.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe C:\Program Files\Clipomatic\Clipomatic.exe C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Users\DM\AppData\Local\Temp\RtkBtMnt.exe C:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEUser.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Users\DM\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe R0 - Hi greener grass. There is no evidence of any malware in your log.

Thanks for that. I guess I just have a lot of unnecessary things running. I was curious what the 017 entry was. I presume I don't need all those Acer services running!

Whether or not various startups are required depends on your configuration and you are the best judge of that. Do not use Hijack This to disable them though, use msconfig, then its easily reversed (Start > Run and type msconfig and OK. Click on the Startup Tab, uncheck unnecessary startups and reboot).
Have a look here for help in deciding which startups can be safely disabled. U = User Defined, X = Malware although you are fine and N= Not needed etc. Look at the (04) entries in your Hijack This log and copy and paste the name of the file in your log into the search box, eg Ati2evxx.exe. If there is no listing, you could check on the Acer Forums here. |
