Question help doing a clean install of windows

Im to the step where i select the CD drive and enter setup... for example,
E:\> setup

and when i do that it gives me the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode"

can anyone help??

which os are you trying to install, normally all you have to do is to insert cd and reboot. The new install should start.

windows 2000. ive tried booting from cd but it doesnt seem to work

Is your first boot device in BIOS set to the cd-rom??

Okay.. Is this a Recovery/Restore cd that you got with a Dell, HP, Compaq, etc system or an original Win2000 cd??

original. says windows 2000 professional.... includes service pack 3. i have the product key and everything

It should auto-start then.. Have you tried going to www.bootdisk.com and getting a set of boot floppies for Win2000??

yep i DL the 4 disks and ehn i enter the first disk it starts reading from it and then gives me a message saying error code 7

is the cd a copy or the original, if original, try cleaning it.

You downloaded the disks but did you extract the files to the floppies?? You can't just copy what your downloaded..

yep i extracted them. I actually made the boot disks from the CD itself through the run command in the start menu on a different coputer. and the CD is an original right from the package

Boot into BIOS and find the Advanced Power Management option.. Now, disable that.. Press F10 to save the change and exit..

Now try your disk or the floppies..
