Windows 98 - Re-install or repair ?

I'm trying to help someone fix their PC . They hve win98 installed , but nothing seems to work properly .

Programs hang and won't close
The control panel takes 60 seconds to load
It won't run any programs called "Setup" from the CD drive - but will run others
There is a program call "Find-more" that takes over Internet Explorer .

Can I clear out Win98 and re-install ? , and how ?

Many thanks for any advice

Alexk

Hi Alexk

Do they have a Win98 installation CD or
maybe a Restore CD that came with the computer?

Win 98SE would be preferable over 98FE
but which ever you use you will need a valid CD Key.

If you want to ditch the old OS and do a clean install,
there's a couple of things to consider.
A clean install will require you to format the C:drive.
Formating will destroy all data on the drive so you will
need to backup anything of importance.

After the installation you will need to install drivers
such as video, audio, modem, network cards, motherboard etc.
These can usually be downloaded from the
manufacturer's web site.
If the computer came with windows preinstalled from the factory,
the drivers might be stored in a folder on the hard drive.
If so back them up to CD's or other media.

If you want to proceed, follow the tutorials here.
