windows xp running much too slow

Can anyone help with this one.

My laptop has slowed down over the last while, to the point of not even being able to watch a dvd, or run a program. Something seems to be eating up the cpu.

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, CWShredder and Norton Utilities and Norton AntiVirus.

If I open task manager and monitor performance, 10% or so is in constant use, and when I move the mouse it jumps to 50% or so, and stays there until I stop moving it. I have an Alps Pointing Device icon in my tray, I don't really know what this program does.

Can anybody please help - I miss watching movies...
