"lpr" outside of system folder taking 4 GB of space

I have been getting out of space notifications on my (older) Lenovo Think Pad with Windows 10 64 bit (not eligible to upgrade to Windows 11). It crashed at Christmas in December 2022 and I moved what I could recover onto CD and reimaged Windows 10.

It seems to have 4 GB tied up in a folder at "c:/lpr". There are other LPR files in the system folder where apparently they should be but this one is dated last June (2022) and only contains a lot of gibberish when I looked at it. Mostly pages and pages of the letter "Y" in files named "enp" followed by 3 numbers.

I'm afraid to delete the lpr that is just in the "C" folder outside the System folder but I could use that 4 GB back.

I have reclaimed some space by the usual methods but I would like to see this "c:/lpr" gone if at all possible. Thanks for any help!

The LPR file extension is most likely best known for its use in the famous Homeworld sci-fi real-time strategy computer game by Relic Entertainment. The LPR file stores some kind of game resource data.

If you had this game, then its safe to delete the files.

Thank you. I never played or even heard of Homeworld. I did play Microsoft Mahjong a couple of times in the past but didnt care for it so stopped playing it. Do you think that may have caused this?

I'm afraid to delete the lpr
A trick I learned many years ago when wondering if safe to delete an unfamiliar file or folder (if our friend Bing Google does not tell me what it is for) is to simply rename the file or folder by appending the name with today’s date and the word "delete", then see if something breaks (get a file not found error).
To illustrate:

Old folder name: samplefolder
New folder name: samplefolder-8-4-2023-delete

Old file name: samplefile.xyz
New file name: samplefile.xyz-8-4-2023-delete
Then, I just go about my business for the next few days and see if everything is still working.

If nothing immediately breaks, what typically happens for me is I forget about it until weeks or even months later when I stumble on the file or folder again. By appending the folder or file name with the date and the word "delete" I can see how long it has been since I renamed it, and the word "delete" reminds me of my intentions. If all has been working since that date, I know it is safe to delete.

But if something breaks after renaming the folder or file, since I only "appended" text to the name instead of totally renaming it, I don't have to remember the original name - I can easily see what it was, and simply cut off my appendage. I mean rename it back and be good to go.

Could prove painful and embarrassing, don't do it!
