I have no idea what you are talking about red_heded_rebel. What is DVD mode and what password are you referring to?

Sorry Anne....now that I read it again the post is a bit confusing! The lady I purchased laptop from brought it home because her roomies kept using it to watch videos by hitting F4 when they turned it on. I don't know if that was to enter setup utility or not. Last week she turned on the laptop and only got a black screen. You can hear it powereing up but the only way to see anything is by hooking up to extra monitor with the SVHS cable. I thought I may need a password to enter the OS.

Should I just have the video screen replaced?

Thanks

I see. Apparently Fn + F4 toggles the Display Mode but I havent come across this situation before so I cant advise you I'm afraid. I found this document but it looks like Win7 wasnt the original operating system on this laptop and there are no Win7 drivers for it.

A colleague just had a suggestion (thanks Spider). Try booting into Safe Mode (restart the computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts). Can you see the Advanced Boot Menu? If so, does Safe Mode load?
