Hangs up when installing downloaded programs

This started happening recently. The install starts and then...nothing. I can see the thing in task manager but that's it. Machine is old gateway P3 450 with XP. Otherwise chugging along fine.

Do you get the popup window for the download? Are you running IE7?

No problem with the download. It's after I click the setup file. I'll usually get some sort of little install prep box but nothing happens after that. BTW I use Firefox and Free Download Manager.

This does not happen with zip files. They unzip OK.

Try a download without using the download manager. If that doesn't work try using IE for one download without the download manager.. Trying to pin down the problem here since you say zip files are ok..

Thanks but I don't think it's a problem with the downloaded file because after downloading them I network them over to another computer of mine and they set up there just fine. I think it's something in the computer I first downloaded it to. After I set them up on the 2nd computer them I can usually just network the whole new program folder back the the first computer and then the program will run.

Ok Stebinus, but that information would have been good to know right from the start.. Don't you think? We're trying to trouble shoot with just a monitor in front of us. Using what words we see on it..

Your Windows Installer may have been corrupted. You can find tips on fixing that here: http://www.appdeploy.com/faq/detail.asp?id=77

how much free space is on the harddrive? Also try deleting the files in your windows temporary folder.

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds promising. For now though just going to take the path of least resistance and install from the network.
Cheers.
