need help installing windows 8.1

I am trying to install Windows 8.1 from a bootable DVD. I choose custom installation and when it gets to the spot where I should be able to choose the installation drive it says it has no storage drivers and cannot find a hard drive. I tried it four or five times going into the bios each time and changing the configuration settings around I have tried all the possibilities. If I turn off secure boot it doesn't bot the disc at all and all the possibilities with secure boot enabled lead me to this error. Anyone know what's wrong?

why are you installing win8.1? was it because of a problem or just upgrading? if a problem, tell what the problem was. also what computer model do you have? please give the full model number. what os is currently on the computer?

I bought the computer about a month ago and it had windows 8 i'm not sure if it was 8.0 or 8.1 because it wouldn't completely boot up. it would boot into the sign in page or whatever where it would ask which user was logging in but then it would say hibernating and the screen would go black for about thirty seconds before automatically bringing up the login page again and then it looped like that until i turned it off. my friend said he could fix it and wiped everything off the hdd. now i got a windows 8.1 installation disk but am getting this error a little ways into the setup process. the bios sees the hdd and a hdd diagnostic test within the bios finds no problems with the device. thanks alot for your time

oh the computer is a toshiba satellite c55-a5300 laptop

Obviously your friend did not know what they were doing, as if it is a relative new computer wiping the hard drive clean was not the way to fix it. How did they wipe the drive clean?

I would restore the computer back to factory then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Boot the computer then start hitting the "F12" key and you should get to the recovery wizard. Once it is back to where it was, then through Windows update you can get Windows 8.1 for free.
