Well I've found wire recorders a step up from wax cylinders, at least the wire doesn't melt in the sun.

Wax cylinder see https://www.nfsa.gov.au/collection/c...der-recordings

Wire recorder see https://arstechnica.com/information-...-audio-format/

Haha! That was a great read.

3 things: First, he's a comedian. Second, he's an Aussie. Third, what's wrong with writing about something you don't like???

Plus, he makes some pretty good points.

Ha Ha, Nice find Dude.

Thou, if you want a music recording format that is the worst.
Just see if you can find old 8-Track Tapes.

The fidelity was better than Cassette Tapes.
They even had Quadrophonic 8-Track tapes & players.
But because of the 8-Track Tapes design, had a higher wear to the Tape.
Causing the tape to stretch, degrading the sound, and even causing the tape to snap.
The 8-Track Players also had plenty of design flaws.
The Capstan would wear down around the sleeve bearings from the pressure that the 8-Track tape put on it.
This would throw off the tape speed, causing the the playback to be off.
Or since the Audio Heads were on a moving, spring loaded ratchet system.
The Audio Head alignment would go off somewhat, and you get cross talk from one of the other tracks on the tape.

That is one music format, I'm glad has gone the way of the Dino.

Excellent Tzap. Write about something you obviously hate. Staying with the theme of the thread.

I don't know your age, but when they came out eight tracks were a godsend. Since all that was available were record players and reel-to-reel, we were all dependant on radio to provide us with entertainment in our cars. 8 tracks changed all that. And 8-track players were portable, and you could take them to the beach and enjoy them.

I won't deny that 8-Tracks made taking your own music to where ever you liked,
much easier than dragging around a 45RPM record player and stacks of 45's.

Just that, I've repaired a lot of 8-Track players.
Thus, I've seen how they can break, and how they can destroy the physical audio tape inside the cartridges over time.

Interestingly.......
The Compact Cassette came out 1963, at about the same time as 8-Track Cartridge.
Only the cassettes were used mostly for dictation machines.

Hey Dude,

You sound like one of my old neighbors.
He had some 200 8-Track Tapes, and once every two or three years.
He would go through his tapes, and unspool the them, to even out the tension on the tape.
Then rewind the tape back on to the reel.
Some of the cases would need to be replaced, or just the foam or pinch roller was worn out from use.

Well....
When I last saw him.
He was replacing the 8-Track Tapes for Audio CD's.
Though he still held on to some of the 8-Track's that weren't yet available on Audio CD.

Remastering the old analog Audio Master Tapes to a Digital Audio recording can be quite hard.
I've watched audio engineers play around for hours on just one track to get rid of back ground noise from the music,
before they even started tweaking the Voice & Instrument Tracks.
