Why are these IP addresses different?!?!

I have two computers connected by a Network Hub (read: not even a router). And the outside IP addresses each get are different. How is this?!?

On some things you are not allowed to have two accounts on two different computers in the same house. Because you are supposed to have one account PER IP address. But how do those that enforce that rule know two computers are in the same house then?

How are the PCs connected to the Internet?
It's not possible for the same PCs on a LAN to have a different external IP address if they share the same Internet connection (and aren't using proxies). That's how web services "know" it's a PC in the same house: they don't, they just treat them the same since they have the same IP address.

The Network Hub is connected to a Clearwire Modem and the two computers are connected to the Hub.

What is the way to check if they have the same IP? I feel like I may be doing it wrong because all computers must have slightly different IP's right? All i did was use one of the sites like "whatismyip.com" It gave me two IP's that start with the same number but the other numbers are different.

Your first uestion is being answered, so I'll answer your second.

The rule about the number of IPs is usualy concerned with being on one subscriber line, a DSL modem or modem/router, for example. The ISP knows the external IP address of that device, as it is connected to their WAN. By looking at the external IP address that traffic is being routed through, tells the ISP where you are and if more than one device is using that route out on to their WAN.

I have 2 laptops on the same wireless network. According to ipconfig they have 2 separate albeit similar ip addresses.... one ends .83, the other .84

The one ending .84 won't open any web pages (see my own thread) but IS connected to the wireless network....

the last part of the IP address is the identifier within your network so you'd expect to see xxx.xxx.xxx.83 and xxx.xxx.xxx.84. I'm off to look at your thread now.

I can't look up the IP address of the other computer now, but I remember that both IP addresses differed by not only the last two numbers but also at LEAST the first three digits were different.

BUMP

please can anybody help me?

Here are the numbers:

Computer 1:

IP:74.60.169.242

Subnet Mask:255.255.240.0

Default Gateway:74.60.160.1

Computer 2:

IP: 75.93.223.121

Subnet Mask:255.255.240.0

Default Gateway:75.93.208.1

If the Subnet Masks are the only thing that is the same, is it detected as the same household?

What is the name of your ISP? Either they allow more than one IP address per household or you are paying for two.

Clearwire. I'm only paying for one IP address. So they are letting me have two?
