Please could someone recommend a program for retrieving 'lost/damaged/deleted' photos and videos on an sd card.

Take a look at this program. I've used it, and I know it works well. If you're using Vista or Windows 7 it may not be compatible though.

Recuva is a freebie I've used with good fortune on cards used with a couple of Canon models. You can find it here.
