2 Accounts gone from Logon/User Accounts.

I've just carried out my weekly cleanup (AdAware, Spybot, AV Scan etc) plus a
defrag, and discovered that 2 of my users have disappeared from the welcome
screen and User accounts, although they still exist in Documents and
settings. I can't figure out how to get them back (tried System Restore -
it's broken again!)
They were there when I put the computer into Standby but gone when my son
turned on again about an hour later. If I try to create new accounts I'm told it can't be done as
the accounts already exist.I found an apparent fix in KB297221 which describes the symptoms exactly, but the article applies to XP Pro, not Home, so I don't have the "Local Users and Groups" to click on. Is there any way of resolving this problem in XP Home?

Hi Cojj, the option to disable an account doesnt exist in WinXP Home. If the Accounts are missing from both Control Panel and the Welcome Screen, your best option may be to create two new accounts (different names) and take ownership of the old files. See here for more information on how to do this.

Hi AnnMarie, I had already started to create the new accounts, it was the file ownership bit that had me stuck. Got it all resolved thanks to your advice, thanks v. much! As a matter of interest, does deleting an account and the files in it (through Control Panel > User Accounts) mean that a new account cannot be created later using the same name?

I'm glad we could help Cojj. No, you should be able to create an account with the same name as an account that was deleted, providing the files have been deleted too. I just tried it to make sure and I was able to create Fred, delete Fred and recreate Fred.
