Toshiba Satellite
I have a old Toshiba Satellite laptop running xp home 32bit. I was wishing to hook a external hard drive to it and run win 7 64 bit as the main drive. I will use this in my small leather working shop and will hook to internet for downloads and checking on emails. If I can do this how is the best way?

AFAIK, Windows 7 cannot be installed to, or run from an external hard drive.

As said Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7 do not support booting from external hard disk.
To expand a bit; For booting, a Master Boot Record (MBR) is needed. This must be available on the disk drive , and this includes external drives. This is not offered by Microsoft, for the simple reason that it has the potential to encourage piracy. Also some BIOS do not support for using USB storage device as a secondary booting option. You can google and maybe find some "Unofficial" software that may work but the risk may not be worth it. |
