Linux Mint 10 Sound

G'day again Folks.

In Linux Mint v.10 Julia. lxde. i386. Gnome 32-bit. Dec 2010. On Toshiba Satellite C640.

There is no sound. I went into 'Sound Preferences' and got this:-

Sound Effects
Output volume = Blank
Alert = Mute
Hardware = Blank
Input = Blank
Output = Dummy Output Stereo
Applications = No applications is currently playing or recording audio

I will get sound if I install *Ubuntu, PCLinux, MoonOS, OpenGEU and others but (for now at least) I want to stay with Linux Mint v10.

Does anybody know where my sound has gone, please.

Sounds like your soundcard is not being detected. Can you post the output of "lspci -v" from a terminal?

Looks like it is being detected and a driver is in use. What do you see if you run "alsamixer" or "sudo alsamixer?"

No the 'Bookmarks' command has packed up.
I click on it. The selection appears. I move the curser down to select the one I want and the selection disappears before I can click on anything.

I just checked. It is the same for everything on that command line.

I am beginning to feel that I must either re-install Mint LTS or try something else.

Its a shame because I thought I had found what I wanted.

Pulse audio was a new default sound server a few ubuntu releases back.
It failed so badly that I installed ALSA to get my sounds back again.
It may have improved now. Here is a wikipedia link:

Yes, yes I believe you're right. Pulse solves a problem that didn't exist, sadly.

Sladden, I'm not familiar with the menu setup of Mint, but you will need to open up your sound preferences/sound mixer and change your hardware profile. There should be an option like "Analog Stereo" as one of the profiles, which should fix your sound ouput.

I went into 'Sound Preferences" and found the following:-

Output Volume = 100%
Sound Effects = Default from theme (With a few others to choose from)
Hardware = Blank (no devices are showing there to configure)
Input = Blank (no devices showing are there to configure)
Output = Dummy Output Stereo
Applications = No application is currently playing or recording audio

I just checked. It is the same for everything on that command line.

I am beginning to feel that I must either re-install Mint LTS or try something else.

Its a shame because I thought I had found what I wanted.
I just did a Mint files update and now the tool-bar is working good again.

I have been trying different distros.
At the moment I am running Lubuntu 11.10.
Before I reburned and installed I put all my files onto an external HD.
I just tried to put them back onto the C: and it tells me that there is not enough room.
I had a look. Evereything is OK except for the Pictures folder.
It is a 320gb HD.
But Lubuntu tells me that the folder has 3.9TB in it.
Is there a way to fix this please?

sladden, if you're going to ask a new question about a completely different distribution/installation, please make a new topic.

You seem to be in a pattern of distribution hopping. By the time someone posts an answer to your question, you have already either reinstalled your OS or installed a completely new OS and are now worried about an entirely new set of problems unrelated to your original problem. Such actions make it difficult to help you.
