Reformatting problem

I've got a situation here,

I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop which is doing my head in, when I try to install things I get a registry error so nothing can be installed.

I've tryed everything and still nothing, so I've decided to reformat my HDD.

However, the way I reformatted my PC was to put in the floppy disk that had the recovery program on then make it boot to that floppy so I could then put the 4 Master CD's in when prompted to.

But this Laptop doesn't seem to have a floppy drive. In the BIOS it say's it boots to the 'Diskette drive'... what?

It doesn't show one in My Computer either.

Any suggestions?

Whats the physical setup of this 6000? Does it have a floppy or just a CD?

Oh bother! (He says trying to moderate his language after getting sauced up).

What happens when you whack the first CD in? Power up and hit the appropriate button to select boot order (End or del on an Inspiron??) ?

I just tryed but nothing happens, it just goes through to the OS.

The button was F12 to select the boot order by the way.

Didn't your Dell come with one disc that was not part of the recovery CD's but was for pre-config?
It's a while since I played with a 6000, but I seem to remember there was one that got it all setup ready for the rest, which were the "factory build" CD's. Have you got those?

No :/ I didn't get it retail, I got it from the place I work at to do my work on. I didn't get any CD's with it.

I have same problem with a hp pavilion ZV6000. I have not fformatted without a floppy before and mine is doing the same thing. Going right to the os setup. I even tried coping files from floppy to cd and then changing boot order to use CD but no luck.

You either need the Dell rescue CD's (from work) or an external floppy that plugs in to the correct port on the side of your lappy.

Failing that, you'll need a fresh install from a bootable CD (and thus loose all your data) .
