My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
My Canon Pixma MX390 series printer will not respond to my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. The printer will work alone, copy, etc., and will respond when plugged into a friend's computer. It has performed properly in the past, but not now, after not having used the printer for several months. As I said, the printer works as it should on it's own. The printer is identified on my laptop and shown as "ready". The port is identified as "LPT1", which I understand is proper for this printer. After many hours, when ALL seems ready and in order, I get "printer not responding", and find it won't print the test page when prompted. I don't have access to my disc and have (I believe) downloaded the print drivers. I have NO CLUE what to do next...help would be greatly appreciated.

NO if it is a USB printer I suspect, then that is the problem; I can't find a MX390 are you sure that is the model? You need to download and install the driver: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppor...ersAndSoftware Plug in your Operating system, I assume VISTA Click on Drivers The first file MX390 series MP driver includes software The 2nd MX390 XPS is just the driver Once you select the right printer model there should be 2 available like above one: MXxxx (your model number) MXxxx (your model number) |

My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
Many thanks, Murph! Yours is the best help I've gotten...but, I'm NOT there, yet. I went to the Canon site, as suggested...the first download "MX390 series MP driver includes software" would NOT download. "Connect Cable" window appeared and after following all instructions I got "Caution! Cannot detect printer, etc." I got nowhere, so closed it. The second site... "MX390 XPS is just the driver"...I successfully installed the XPS printer drive. Then I discovered my printer port to be, "Canon Local Port" (no longer "LPT1" yet nothing about a USB Port). Still, not able to print. My printer folder shows the printer as "Canon MX390 series Printer XPS" Is that the way it should be...I don't recall the "XPS" before when all worked well. Yes, my OS is Windows Vista. Additional help, if you can, Murph...again Thanks!

My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
Follow up, Murph...my printer is a Canon Pixma MX392, specifically, purchased
in 1/14. I used it with my current Dell laptop until 4/14, and all worked just as it should. |

My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
Another follow-up, Murph, based on my continuing to search for an answer.
The Device Manager lists my printer under "Other Devices", with a ! in yellow shown. Should be under "USB controllers"? I clicked on "Other Devices" and the window showed "the drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" The Port Location is shown as: "Port_#0002.Hub_#0007" When I clicked on "Reinstall Drivers", the result was "Drivers Couldn't Be Found". Murph, this is a lot which, hopefully, will shed more light into my problem. Thank, again! |

Yes your problem is the USB driver is not installed, thus the printer will not work.
Lets do this: 1.Unplug the USB cord from the laptop to the printer. 2. Go into Device Manager (add/Remove programs) and highlite and uninstall anything with Canon 3. Now go into Device Manager and remove anything that has a yellow/re d mark, by right clicking on it Now reboot Once booted up PLUG the USB printer cable in (make sure the laptop is on line) it should find it and find the drivers to install. |

My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
Murf...really sorry for the delay, but have been BUSY for many hours, feeling
all along it was "gonna work". I did ALL you suggested, uninstalled the printer where there was a "yellow !" in Device Manager, rebooted, etc. What has been happening is the drivers are installing, but STILL the printer is NOT being detected (Caution! Cannot detect...). At present under "Printers" only my Canon MX390 series is shown and is "Ready". In the Device Manager the device (printer) is listed under the USB Controllers as "MX390 series". Under Printer Properties/Port the is shown as "canon...Local Port...MX390 series Printer". After numerous attempts, Murf, the bottom line is that the drivers are installed but detection of the printer is NOT happening! Still feel there's a USB problem? Any chance there's something about the printer that's NOT permitting detection? I trust you'll have more ideas that I can apply and get this "thing" up and going! Many thanks!! I'm just being curious here, is the printer plugged into a USB port on the computer or into a USB external hub? |

Get into your BIOS SETUP, when you first boot the screen tells you how to enter SETUP (usually a "F" key) I think Dell uses the "F2" key.
Once in there go through the menu items, each computer is different. Find something that says USB, anything that has USB in it, ENABLE it. Then find where you can SAVE and EXIT. Let me know. |

I'm plugged directly into a USB port on my laptop. As I mentioned at the outset the
two performed with no problems from purchase date in 1/14 until 4/14 when I left the printer in my motorhome and used my home printer. It's just now when I'm again in the motorhome that the two are not working together. Thanks for tryingto help! |

Murf...thanks for coming back. I'm having to be away from my "machines" for hours at
a time. Just saw your latest...and I'll have to leave again before getting much into what you've suggested. By the way, I'm just having an opportunity later today to try a friend's laptop with my printer. That'll be interesting. You remember my printer did fine with another friend's computer...I didn't have a chance to try his computer hooked to my printer at the time. I've gotta leave for now, but will be back at it later this afternoon Thanks! Last edited by hugh37; February 4th, 2015 at 06:47 PM. |

My Printer "Not Responding" to My Laptop
Murf...finally back! As you suggested I went into my BIOS Setup Utility
and under "Onboard Devices" found, "External USB Ports". There, I saw that it's already ENABLED (factory default). I found nowhere any other reference to USB.... At present, my printer is shown as default and ready, and under it's Properties/Ports is shown...check mark...by canon...Local Port...Canon MX390 series Printer. In Device Manager I find "MX390 series" (word "printer" not shown) listed under USB Controllers. Still, at times, I'm finding in the Device Manager under "Imaging Devices" my printer, carried as "MX390 series" (word "printer" not shown), with a YELLOW !. When I see that, I right-click and uninstall. REALLY, have you ever seen such? And, I can't begin to explain how it happened. Trust you can stay with me a bit long, Murf. Again, many thanks! |

MX390 series MP driver includes software" would NOT download. "Connect Cable" window appeared .
But you successfully downloaded the driver itself right? Lets start over, as obviously something is wrong. 1. Get into Control Panel/Programs and Features or Add/Remove programs (not sure in Vista) 2. See if you see something like MX390 Drivers? If so highlight and uninstall. 3. Go back to: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppor...ersAndSoftware Download to your desktop, do not run just save it. 4.Go into Control Panel again click on Printer Icon 5. If you see the MX printer highlight and remove it. 6. Get into Device Manager highlight and remove any printers you see. Now (do not have printer attached), reboot. Now go back and double click the file you downloaded and run it to install the driver, if it ask to plug the printer in do so, if not do not. Once that is done plug in the printer Windows should find and install the driver. If it does then ensure the port is USB, if during the installation if it asked what port ensure you tell it USB. Lets se what happens |
