Boot error -- The Blue Screen of Death

When I rose this morning, I discovered I had left a window open and Windows was frozen to the point that I had to hit the kill button by holding the power button down. But when I tried to restart, it either tells me Windows shut down to avoid damage, or it runs startup repair and goes to a blank screen. On the former, I get the Blue Screen of Death, and the error code is as follows:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78E2640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

This screen also suggests I run CheckDisk, but I cannot figure out how to issue a command during the boot process. I have also tried to use my Symantec Rescue Disk, to no avail.

Reboot then before the Windows screen start tapping "F8". On the menu select "Safe Mode". If it boots up into Safe Mode then restart normally.

Thanks

I couldn't remember which function key to hit, or if it even worked in the newer platform. I mean, I'm still a Windows 3.1 guy (LOL -- my oldest computer is XP, but 3.1 was SO easy to find files and to work on)...the boot screen had two options, I think they were F2 for menu and F12 for boot sequence.

I tried opening in both safe mode and safe mode with C: prompt, and I get THIS blue screen: Unmountable boot volume. Error code is 0x000000ED (0x8583B6B8, 0xc0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).
