CD/DVD drive missing

Hi to all,
I tried the steps below but I dont have any filters in the right pane,I did see upper filters in 967. The fix from microsoft and all scans say the drivers are updated but the drive is not recognized.Help!!!
My system is Windows Vista Home Basic
Dell
Service Pack 2
32 Bit OS,Memory 2gb

It is strongly recommended that you backup your registry, before performing these steps. If not sure, please do not perform these steps and contact a system engg.

1. Click the Start Button/Windows Icon (start menu).

2. Either type "regedit" or click Run and type regedit.

NOTE: User Account Control may ask for permission to continue. Select Continue

This will then load the Registry Editor.

3. In Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

NOTE: You will know you are in the right place because the Status Bar at the bottom of Registry Editor will show the above in the status bar.

Remember, you're looking for 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

There are other entries with only 1, 2 digit differences - so don't get confused!

3. In the right hand pane, find and click UpperFilters.

4. Right click and select Delete. If you're not confident using the right click, then select the Edit menu, then click Delete.

5. In the right hand pane, find and click LowerFilters.

6. Right click and select Delete. If you're not confident using the right click, then select the Edit menu, then click Delete.

7. Exit Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer. You should have your DVD/CD Rom again.

How long have you had this problem? If it's fairly recent, try running System Restore. Your files wont be affected. See here.

It's possible that your problem is hardware related. Can you see the drive in Device Manager? If so, rightclick on it and choose Uninstall and reboot and let us know if this helped.

Can you see the drive in Device Manager? If so, what model Dell do you have?

There are a couple of other steps we can try first.

Try running the System File Checker. Click on the Start orb and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Once the Command Prompt opens, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit Enter. The System File Checker will start. It might take a while to complete so be patient. Reboot when it has completed. If you get any errors, please post them here.

If the System File Checker completes without issues and it didnt help, it would be a good idea to run chkdsk. To do this, open My Computer, rightclick on your drive and select Properties > Tools. Look for Error Checking and click "Check Now". Select both "Automatically fix file system errors" and the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options and click Start.

You will get a warning that Windows can't complete the tests until you reboot so reboot and chkdsk will start.

Stages 4 and 5 can be very slow in Vista and the progress bar may not appear for quite a few minutes so please be patient.

You can view the log in Event Viewer. Hit the Windows key plus r and type:

eventvwr.msc

and ok. Click on Windows Logs > Application and look for wininit. Doubleclick to open and you should see the results. Please copy and paste them here.

No. I said open My Computer and rightclick on your drive and choose Properties > Tools etc. Please try again and make sure you check both the "Automatically fix file system errors" and the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options.

That looks ok. Can you see the drive in Device Manager? If so, what model Dell do you have?

That's your hard drive. If your CD/DVD drive is not listed in Device Manager, the problem is most likely hardware related and I dont work on hardware issues.

We have run through the most likely software related scenarios with no luck so I think it would be a good idea to post your problem in our Hardware Forum now zip316.
