Corrupted System?
Hello,
I am using Vista-Ultimate 64 bit with hardware listed below. I believe I have a virus or corrupted system file. It may have started when I accidentally downloaded a file while surfing the net. Nothing happened at the time, but in the next few days, computer wouldn't "sleep" and I've had a number of other irregularities. I ran sfc /scannow, and it noted it was unable to repair all files. I redirected the CBS.log and filtered two ares of concern: which reference the file fPHost.dll. Online I can't find much about this file and how to repair it. Comments appreciated. Maybe I just need to reinstall my system (not fun, but managable). Additional notes:
1. I did run virus checker with both AVG 8.5 and Windows Defender. No issues encountered. 2. I was just able to put my computer to sleep and wake it up, with no errors in the event log (apart from a benign error (EVENT ID 61456), which is typical. Maybe sfc helped after all? Comments and perspective would be appreciated. Thanks! Scott |

another clue:
When my computer starts, I get a "Function Provider Discovery Host has stopped working". This is clearly referencing the fdph file. Only issue is: what do I do about this? How do I restore this file? Scott |

Hi Scott. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click on Start and type cmd in the Start Search box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the following command in the Code box after the prompt > and hit Enter.
dir /s /a "c:\fdPHost*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread. |

You might want to print these instructions. Boot into Safe Mode (restart your computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts).
Once Safe Mode has loaded, make sure that you can view hidden files and folders, uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files". Next navigate to c:\Windows\System32 and look for fdPHost.dll. When you find it, rightclick on it and rename it to fdPHost.old. Next navigate to c:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_fdphost_31bf3856ad364e35_6 .0.6001.18000_none_d7b6df6e26c9c593 and open the amd64_fdphost_31bf3856ad364e35_6 .0.6001.18000_none_d7b6df6e26c9c593 directory. Find fdPHost.dll and then rightclick on it and choose Copy. Go back to c:\Windows\System32 and rightclick on the System32 directory and choose Paste. Reboot and tell me if you still have a problem with that error. |

Ann Marie,
Thx for the response. This is easy enough to do, except for one thing: I am unable to rename the file fdPHost.dll since I do not have permissions. When I looked, it appears only a "Trusted System Installer" has the correct permissions, and I was unable to modify permissions for users or administrator. Can you help with this so I can rename and replace fdPHost.dll? Thank you! Scott |

OK, I was able to take control and change my permissions. I completed the steps listed above, but unfortunately I still have the error. My assumptions is this is more complex than simply a corrupted fdPHost.dll file.
When I went to the location: c:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_fdphost_31bf3856ad364e35_6 .0.6001.18000_none_d7b6df6e26c9c593 I originally saw only fdPHost.dll, but when I returned later, I saw a 1K File fdPHost.MOF. Not sure if this is signficant, just noting it. Scott |

Have you tried running System Restore Scott? That should work. |

Thx for the suggestion. I hope this solution "holds". Scott PS BTW, you seem to be uniquely capable; not sure how you got such in-depth knowledge of MS OS, but it is impressive. |
