Hour glass keeps replacing cursor

Hi,
I am using Windows 2003. For some reason, every 10 seconds the cursor turns into the hour glass symbol. That lasts for only a second and returns to the normal cursor arrow, which beging the new cycle. How can I stop this from happening? (My operating system xps.) I have already run Trent virus scan, defragged and run a disk cleanup.
Thanks for any help on this matter.
