Windows Vista Problem solving for the Windows Vista Operating System. Please remember to state which edition of Vista you are using - Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate etc. and whether you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version if you know. |

Install old software
I want to install a DVD I've had a long time, called 'Chronicle of the 20th Century'. It is copyrighted 1996. However, when I try to install, I keep getting the message 'Your computer not compatible with 256 color.'
I have three computers, XP, Vista, 7 and they are all obviously too advance for the software - I get the same message with all of them. How do I get around this? Thanks. |

See this Microsoft page for information on using compatibility mode in Win7.
Similar instructions for XP's compatibility mode are on this Microsoft page. |

Well I have certainly been struggling - getting the right resolution was difficult until it mentioned it could be 256 OR 16 bit, which helped. Now I find that the program is installed, I can't run it, because the sound compression software has not been installed properly - I was told to run it again - which I did! However, it makes no difference I still get that same error message!. Please can you help me with this knotty problem. Thanx. (Just been told this message was too short I should add something to it - which I have!)

Nancy some software designed for Win95/98 just will not run as it should on XP and later and in this case, you might have to accept it.

I have had this DVD, Chronicle of the 20th Century. since 1996 it was a cover disk with .net. I notice that the same version is still being sold on ebay!!!! I think it can be installed, it is just my incompetence that's the problem. |

Here's a link to a CD-Rom on Amazon. The second reviewer says she can't get it to work on ME or Vista.

Thanks IPR512. Windows 98 wasnt released until 1998 so that software was written for Windows 3.1/Windows 95. The first review was written before the release of Windows XP so we have no evidence that it will run on anything other than a DOS based system.
I ran a search and didnt see an Ebay listing however I found the below comment on a NZ Auction site. Quote:
Nancy, it's possible that there is a third party emulator out there that it might run on however I have no experience with these so your best bet is to try a posting a new topic in the Applications Forum. |

You're welcome AnnMarie.
I was a big fan of MS Picture It, but that doesn't work with Windows 7, and it was lots newer than the software Nancy is trying to use. Sometimes we just have to get used to living without certain things, and old software is one of them. |
