Cannot Obtain IP Address

I am running XP pro SP2 on my desktop. The network runs through a Dell Power connect 3248 switch and a SonicWALL router/firewall to a cable modem. My 1394 connection and Local Area Connection have been bridged, thus are running controlled through a network bridge. Two days ago my computer was connecting to the network without a problem. Then, it simply stopped working. I checked the problem was that it wasn't obtaining an IP address (went to the default 169.254.213.44). I was able to temporarily fix the problem by manually configuring a permanent IP address, but now even that isn't working. I haven't installed any new programs or changed any settings to cause this problem. I did have the same problem for about a week, over a year ago and it simply resolved itself.

Having the local are connection and the 1394 bridged may be causing conflicts,
especially if you are using any firewire devices as 1394 is firewire.

I just unbridged the connections. It still won't automatically obtain an IP address (I did restart the computer), but it did connect when I manually set an address. This works for me, as long as it doesn't stop working again, but if there are any ideas on why it won't automatically obtain an address I would be interested to hear them.

Thanks

Make sure dhcp is enabled on the router, not on the switch.
Run the network setup wizard on the computer and select
connect to the internet through a lan.
This will disable dhcp on the computer,so all devices on
the network are getting IP's from the router.
Should resolve any conflicts with dhcp IP's being assigned
from both the router and the computer.
