Shut down problems

I don't have this problem all the time, but sometimes I have trouble shutting my computer off. It will go to the windows is shutting down screen and then just hang there forever. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off.

The times I don't have this problem, the computer shuts down real fast, with no problem.

Any ideas.

Here's a MS link to solving that issue, might help.

You stated that this does not occur all the time, is there some program/s your running at times that might hang during shutdown?

Is that the same as using msconfig, I use that as a selective start up, so that only norton runs in the background when the compter starts up.

I do agree with you that this is connected to something in the background since it is not a constant issue.

Here's how I have msconfig set up, if that would help you any to see if I have it right.
In the generals tab I have, Selective Startup, marked
as well as,
Process SYSTEM.INI File
Process WIN.INI File
Load System Services
Load Startup Iteams
Use Original Boot.INI

In the startup tab, I have ccApp (which is Norton selected)

I may have fixed the problem, by pressing the reset button on the bottom of the computer, and buy running a disk error check. Guess I'll just have to wait an see. Thanks

No that didn't fix it. It seems to only freeze on shut down when I have the laptop, unplug for more then 10 or so minutes. It exist out of the desk top right away. Goes to saveing setting. And once it gets to the shutting down windows, the mouse pointer will disappear, but after that it wont shut down. it will just remain on that screen, until I hold down the power button.

Any other ideas would be great.

I may have fixed the problem. I went to the hp web site to check if there were any updates, since the last time I spoke to them about my issue. There was a new BIO's update from the last one I had downloaded. And this one says it fixes issues where the computer hangs on shutdown screen. So hopefully this will fix my problem.
