how do I copy/save a paused movie file as an image?

this is driving me nuts...how do I copy/save a paused movie file as an image? every method and application i've tried this with turns up giving me a black or see-through screen in place of the paused frame

i don't think you can copy/save a paused movie file as an image. never heard of it. what i use to take a picture/snapshot of a movie I'm watching is WINDVD. it has a snapshot button. that you hit to take the pic.
