What is best way to upgrade from Office 2003 to Office 2007 and save files?

I am upgrading from Office 2003 to Office 2007. I have Windows 7 operating system. I want to save some Word files and some mail. Some of the functions on office Outlook no longer work properly. How do I save files, and mail I want to keep? Should I uninstall 2003 before installing 2007? In outlook I cannot send mail, get message "553. 5.7.1 sender address rejected:not logged in. I have AOL for mail. I have gone directly to AOL and gotten mail there, but it has not solved the problem. I have new computer and was able to send mail, this is recent problem. Thanks

Problem on upgrading solved, but have new problem! I have windows 7 , and the word/ excel starter opens automatically. Do you know how I can make Office 2007 (word and excel) the default programs? Should I just delete the starter? Thanks for help, Arlburn

If you now have Office 2007 and no longer want the "Starter" then go to Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features and Uninstall the Starter, reboot.

If you want to keep the starter and still have Office 2007 you will have to make some registry changes and file association changes. I would dump starter..
