Sandboxie can protect you from such threats, but if you keep Windows updated, use a firewall and an updated anti-malware program and you avoid risky behavior like illegal filesharing via torrents and P2P sites, you don't visit pornography or illegal gambling sites, and you avoid being click-happy on unsolicited downloads, attachments and links, you don't need Sandboxie. Sandboxie is often used legitimately by folks who test a lot of programs on their computers, but are also used by others who want to hide while visiting places they shouldn't.

I doubt he deleted anything important intentionally. And certainly, since this computer had Vista on it, it was not new.

I have one suggestion, a longshot but worth a try!
Open System Protection via Control Panel\System
Click on 'C' Drive
Select 'Configure'
Select 'Turn off system protection'
and 'Apply'
Reboot your computer then return to System protection, 'C' drive, Configure and turn system protection back on (select 'Restore system settings and previous versions of files') and Apply the change.
