Vista refuses to start

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario c306 that is running Windows Vista Home Premium. The other night while on YouTube my laptop froze, so I decided to reboot. After trying to reboot…. Vista refuses to start, it keeps defaulting to the” Windows Error Recovery Page”
with the options to start in:

-Safemode
-Safemode with networking
-Safemode with command prompt
-Last known good configuration
-Start windows normally

I tried them all and nothing works, the system continues to loop back to the Windows Error Recovery Page.

So I decided to run the Vista Installation CD and selected the Repair, at which time it continued to loop-boot to the Windows Error Recovery Page.

I decided to use the Vista Installation CD to run command prompt and entered chkdsk at which time some items were fixed but system fails to start.

Here's the real "kicker".....i don't have any oem recovery disks or a dedicated recovery partition. Am i screwed?

Any help is appreciated!

-Philly

Hi Philadelphia. I find your post a bit confusing. You have an OEM operating system but no Recovery partition? Why not?

Is Vista the original operating system on this laptop? If so, Compaq will provide you with the Recovery Disks for your model for a small charge. See here.

There is no option for "recovery media" for this particular model that is listed....

I've went through everything concerning the link you provided.

Any chance you could help me so w/o recovery media?

No I cant, you have already tried any other option that might work without requiring a restore to factory default settings.

That model shipped with Recovery Manager installed. See here.

The issue may not even be software related. As I already said, you have tried all options that dont require a reinstall or in your case, a restore to factory default.

No problem. You could try running chkdsk again but if that doesnt do the trick then I suspect the issue may be a hardware problem.

Hi AnnMarie,

So i reinstalled Windows Vista and was able to create a new OS. (rules out suspected HDD or hardware failure)

I did not format the drive and thus carried the old system files which are tagged "windows.old".

Updated all the software on the new installation including AVG subscription, winupdate, and malwarebytes.

Avg is clean...Kapersky-online is clean...but Malwarebytes is flagging my windows.old folder with the following errors:

Pup.Pwdump.....C:\windows.old\users\robb\AppData\L ocal\temp\RarSFX0\RockXP4_.exe

Trojan.IRCBot.....C:\windows.old\users\robb\AppDat a\Roaming\Thininstall\Agerbrator 4.0\40000027100002i\Algerbrator.exe

After i delete these files with MWB will i be ok?

I want to make recovery disks if these flags are insignificant.

Warm Regards,

Philly
