LinuxMint.
I discovered something the other day that (I found) very surprising.
I had installed and used a 'LinuxMint 10' onto a HD in a desktop computer. I was messing around with another computer and needed a HD for it. I took the 'LinuxMint 10' HD from the old computer and put it into the new one. I had not changed the boot sequence from HD 1st. So when I booted it up it went straight into LinuxMint HD boot, and (although it went into pause a couple of times while it played with itself), It booted straight into LinuxMint 10. Picked up all the hardware and worked as though it had been installed into the new computer. I am finding this rather amazing. Has any-body else found this? |

Most Linux distributions perform hardware autodetection, so moving a Linux install from one computer to another is usually pretty pain free. This can be done by physically moving a drive from one machine to another or cloning a drive. I setup a Gentoo machine back in 2004 or 2005 that has survived two motherboard replacements and a hard drive upgrade. It is still working perfectly.
Also, I recently restored a mailbox file from a NetBSD machine that has been dead since sometime around 2001. The original server was a dual Pentium III. I setup the drive in a Core2Duo desktop machine and it booted right up. Took me a few minutes to remember the login, however. |

Yes it is good.
I had not realized that it worked from ALL Linux. Until now I had thought that it was something that only Puppy did. Well, it is nice to keep learning. |
